adidas Originals Consortium Project – Rod Laver Series

First launched in the 1970s as the signature shoe of then world tennis champion, George “Rod” Laver, the Rod Laver forgoes adidas’ iconic three-stripes to refocus more on simplicity of the shoes than branding. Now, nearly four decades later, the Rod Laver is reworked for the adidas Originals Consortium Project. adidas worked with 9 different global consortium to make over the Rod Laver to create very limited editions of the shoe that are to be available at Consortium stores.

The first drop includes work with New York’s DQM, Barcelona’s LimitEDitions, Los Angeles’ UNDFTD, Tokyo’s V.A and Rod Laver in original colorway of The Grass Court. A mix of materials are used on this drop– DQM prefered a blend of suede, leather and canvas in brick red while LimitEDitions makes use of an interesting concotion of wristband and tennis ball outer material for theirs. Each Consortium comes with their own unique detail for the shoe that ranges from extra padded lining from LimitEDitions to reinforced stitched eyelets from UNDFTD and V.A.

All the shoes share a similarity and respect for simplicity that was key to the original Rod Laver, thus the collection’s pieces are kept clean in monotone albeit a different color for lining. Also, all of them feature the handshake logo on the tongue that represents the project. The adidas Originals Consortium Project Rod Laver will be available from August through September at respective consortium stores.
