BlackBerry not immune to sypware

News of spyware in the iPhone is not new. But researchers are now investigating the use of spyware in other smartphones and the BlackBerry is at risk as well.

Tyler Shields, a senior researcher at the Veracode Research Lab, has written a piece of spyware that would trigger a BlackBerry phone to send a copy of the device’s contact list, call log and incoming text messages to another phone.

While the security features of a BlackBerry mean that users can limit the data that the installed spyware has access to, many users may not know how to secure their devices from rogue applications.

Just as how hackers have found brand new means to attack computers, the rise in the use of smartphones means that there is a new market for them to conquer.

It is time to change the misconception that smartphones are not at risk. The lack of attacks so far is simply because hackers have had no real reason to target the devices yet.
