Let’s get down to business with HP ProBook 4510s

Apart from the fact that its glossy surface smudges easily, this notebook is as easy on the eye as it is tough, with handy security aids to boot.

Overall, the HP ProBook 4510s offers value for money for the business user watching his purse strings.

Featuring a 15.6-inch high-definition (HD) widescreen display, the HP ProBook 4510s, at nearly 2.6kg, is not the smallest notebook in town. While the 279 minutes battery life is impressive, I would seriously think twice about taking this slightly bulky machine – though it looks sleek in both glossy black and wine red – on my travels.

Pity, because the machine is built for the bangs, bumps and knocks of gadding about. For starters, HP ships it with HP 3D Drive Guard, a system that protects the sensitive hard disk and the data inside. When the three-axis accelerometer detects the sudden movement, the system “parks” the hard drive head, preventing any scratches on the hard drive and resulting damage.

Under the hood, the hardware adequately powers a typical business notebook. The test machine came with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 50GB hard disk and DVD burner.

For graphics, the key components is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics chipset with 512MB video memory. So, its performance is comparable to others in its ilk. For example, the ProBook scored 214 points on the MobileMark 2007 benchtest.

On the security front, the ProBook offers peach of mind. You can encrypt the hard drive so that even if the notebook is stolen, the thief will not be able to access your private data.

Additional software tools like Disk Sanitiser wipes clean all data from the hard disk. Businesses with high staff turnover would benefit from this security precaution because IT managers can erase all data before transferring the machine to a new user.

There is also the nifty SpareKey. In case you forget a password, this tool prevents you from being locked out of your computer. Simply answer three personal questions to identify yourself and you can regain access to your notebook.

There are other smart touches. Just press the small QuickLook button on the keyboard and conveniently check your calendar and contacts – all in a couple of seconds and without having too boot up Windows.

Typing is especially comfortable, with keys on the extra large keyboard neither too tough nor too soft. Also noteworthy is the raised keyboard, which allows you to brush off dust before it starts to gather.

Should you need to connect this notebook to peripherals like a printer, digital camera or portable hard disk, there are four USB ports at your disposal. To read data from memory cards like SD, there is a multi-memory card reader.

For those who need to transfer HD images from the notebook to another HD display like a large screen LCD TV, the ProBook also comes with a built-in high definition multimedia interface port.

With smart touches for security and function access, this affordable notebook has all the important bases covered.
