A whopping 18.7 billion mobile applications will be downloaded globally by 2014. Of this figure, 3.3 billion will be paid-for tools; the rest will be free. Global consulting firm Ovum said this in its Mobile Application Downloads Forecast: 2009-14, released earlier this month.
The sales will ring in some US$5.7 billion (S$7.9 billion) in 2014 for stores like BlackBerry App World, Android Market and Windows MarketPlace, as well as independent app stores run by the likes of GetJar and Handango.
The growth is not unexpected given that more people will pay for useful apps, like those to find a restaurant, ATM or game apps, those that are merely quirkly (like gem visuals that proclaim how are you feel), will likely be relegated to the Hell Of Useless Ideas, if there was one.
Also, given that the growth will be strongest in the next two to three years, now is the time for budding app developers to work on them.
