Rucksack Revival

December 22nd, 2008

Kicking and screaming on the way to my first-ever day at school, I had with me a trusty, standard all-black Eastman Years down the road, trends get left behind and one’s whims and fancies take on a discerning attitude - but good ol’ Eastpak still remain. Their latest offering of bags and accessories is truly the strongest revamp to date for such an established brand.

Chic and Green - Propper and Grobal’s Monogram

December 20th, 2008

If your idea of home decor still revolves around bonsai or fengshui inspired water fountains, it’s time to get contemporary. Local distributor of designer products, Monogram, offers a novel perspective on indoor gardening with labels Propper and Grobal. These creations boast a world-beating Karim Rashid aesthetic - therefore are nifty as anything, but yet supremely affordable. Grobal’s self-watering plant pots are, well, self-explanatory and also truly a sight to behold, as are the watering cans from Propper. Combine both and you have your own pretty little personal flowerbed - all while contributing to global un-warming (or Grobal cooling if you like, ha-ha).

Kuala Lumpur City Guide

December 19th, 2008

Airport
The KL International Airport services four main areas: Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Seremban and Malacca. It is around 50 kilometers south of the city center, however, there is also a branch of the airport (so to speak) in the city center located at the KL Sentral station. As KL Sentral has its own internationally recognized destination code (XKL), many airlines will allow you to check in your baggage from here before boarding the KLIA Ekspres to the airport.

The journey between KL International Airport and KL Sentral on the high-speed KLIA Ekspres takes around 30 minutes, with trains running from 5.00pm to midnight. The cost is RM35 (US$11). For the same price and 10 minutes longer you can also travel on the KLIA Transit, which makes three intermediate stops at major suburbs.

There are many bus companies offering transfers from the airport to various destinations across the city. While you will save some money (fares start at around RM10 or US$3) they take a longer.
Taxis and Airport Limos leaving from the airport charge a standard rate of around RM68 - purchase your coupon before you exit the international arrivals gate. Note that lots of unofficial drives will approach you and will probably charge you much more.

Business Etiquette
Kuala Lumpur is a very cosmopolitan city and home to many ex-pats. Accordingly, business practices aren’t drastically different from other major hubs. The main difference is that as a Muslim country, alcohol isn’t used as the same social tool as it may be in other places. While it isn’t a total taboo, you are probably better opting for a soft drink or coffee at a business meeting; even if it is in the evening. When in doubt, just follow suit.
Office hours are generally from 9.00 to 17.00, however, governmental bodies tend to close a bit earlier.

You’ll have to persevere with SAMBA or look at 3rd party alternatives such as..
