Price-fixing for LCD panels
Taiwanese maker of thin-film transistor-liquid crystal displays Chi Mei Optoelectronics has joined five other companies in pleading guilty – or will do so – to try to fix prices of LCD panels. The companies fixed worldwide panel prices between Sept 14, 2001 and Dec 1, 2006 and the United State Justice Department has ordered the firm to pay US$220 million (S$306 million) in fines for its role in the conspiracy.
The fines have been slapped on LG Display, Taiwan’s Chunghwa Picture Tubes and Japan’s Sharp Corporation, Hitachi Displays and Epson Imaging Devices.
Mobile phone maker Nokia and AT&T have sued some of the LCD makers for damages resulting from price fixing.
From mobile phones to laptops to TVs, myriads of electronic products depend on an LCD monitor. While the practice of price fixing stopped three years ago, it has led to lower prices for LCD TVs in recent years.
To be fair, the drop can also be due in part to the lower cost of manufacturing. The consumer can be ambivalent to the goings-on, except to note that the time is ripe to pick up that new flat screen TV. For businesses, this anti-competitive case serves as a reminder that corrupt practices do not pay.
