Prolink Glee TA-009 lightweight netbook
Prolink, better known for producing modems and routers, has belatedly decided to jump onto the netbook bandwagon with the Glee TA-009.
It is a case of too little, too late: its specifications lag behind those of its competitors, and it offers nothing that differentiates itself from the ever-increasing crowd.
The Glee is a basic netbook and it looks the part. When other netbooks are exploring patterned designs (Lenovo Ideapad S10-2) and textures (the Toshiba NB105), the Glee TA-009 has has a simple rounded design that makes it look plain.
At 1.1kg, the netbook is one of the lighter ones in the market now, with the usual webcam, microphone and Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities. However, it lacks Bluetooth capability and its 1.60GHz Intel Atom N270 processor is outdated – the newest offerings from competitors use the faster 1.66GHz N280 processor. While the difference may be slight, you cannot afford to lose out on the basics, especially when the competition has already moved on to differentiating themselves through aesthetics, extra software and more.
The Glee TA-900 ships with a three-cell battery that lasts for 2.5 hours, which is below average for the netbook category. If you want more battery life, you can get the Glee with a six-cell battery for an additional $100, and that gives you about six hours of juice. Sound from its stereo speakers is crisp and clear, but predictably lacks bass. The keyboard’s poor layout means that some of the keys have been squeezed to half the size of a normal key. Another gripe is the mouse buttons of the touchpad, which are unconventionally placed at the left and right of the touchpad rather than below it.
Overall, the Prolink Glee TA-900 is a clumsy first attempt by Prolink and comes off as a half-hearted effort. What is particularly disappointing is that Prolink failed to leverage on its wireless networking expertise to make the netbook stand out. The Glee has only 802.11b/g Wi-Fi capabilities, when other netbooks like the Asus EeePC and the Aspire One already have Wireless N support.
Final Say
In the tightly-contested netbook market, this netbook fails to match the competition.
