Slight drop in global PC shipments

Research firm Gartner said that global PC shipments will suffer only a 2 percent decline from last year, which is more optimistic than its June forecast which anticipated a 6 percent drop.

As the world economy moves out of the financial crisis, PC shipments are returning to stronger growth. In Asia-Pacific, PC shipments in total will grow 7.4 percent this year. The laptop category, however, is running away with a 25.6 percent expansion while desk-based units dropped 2.8 percent.

IT purchases reflect the state of the economy. The launch of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7 on Oct 22, could stimulate demand but only among tech-savvy consumers.

Governments and companies will hold off purchases of Windows 7 PC systems until next year. If the global economy recovers faster, then it can trigger a replacement drive for older PCs to newer ones.
