Smartphone pricing under pressure

Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the Blackberry cellphone, missed analysts’s projections for its second quarter earnings ending Aug 30.

While its fiscal second-quarter sales were US$3.53 billion, a 37 percent increase from a year earlier, it was less than the US$3.62 billion forecast by analysts.

RIM is under pressure from competitors like the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. Competition is likely to increase in coming months as more cellphone makers release new handsets powered by Android, the operating system from Google.
