Sony Vaio X mobile PC

Sony’s Vaio X impresses at first sight. It is so light (655g to 745g) and thin (13.9mm) that is seems inconceivable that a full-fledged PC notebook with an 11.1 inch (LED-backlit, 1366×768 resolution) screen can be housed in that shell.

It is powered by an Intel Atom processor (1.86GHz to 2GHz) and comes with SSD storage (64GB to 128GB), 2GB memory and the latest Windows 7 operating system.

The first models in the market lack WWAN support, but a third configuration scheduled to be available later this month will have this feature.

Bundled battery life is estimated at between 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 hours, with the right screen and performance settings.

The Vaio X is the latest in a series of outstanding Sony designs. But, like the Vaio P, the innards of the machine could have been beefed up.

It is an expensive proposition to pay so much for a PC powered by a processor found mainly in much cheaper netbooks. Surely Sony could have put in a CPU with more heft and thrown in more state-of-the-art features.

That would have made the Vaio X an even greater machine. More review at Mobile Computing.
