Vodafone launches new Internet service

Vodafone’s new Internet service which debuted last week offers access to a host of integrated social networks and applications. With this move, it is trying to grow data revenues and compete with smartphones like the iPhone.

Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile phone operator by revenue, said its new Vodafone 360 service lets users store contacts from the phone and social networks all in one place.

Vodafone users will be able to download the service and choose a suitable data plan. The service hopes to capitalise on the growing demand by customers for mobile access to the Internet, to surf the Web, share photos, update social networks and read e-mail.

Telcos around the world are trying to become more than just “pipes”. They way, they know what customers want and can create value-added services to increase their revenue.

Led by Apple, handset makers are offering apps like games, music and video, sidelining telcos to just being data carriers.

Vodafone is not alone in its quest to cosy up to customers. SingTel has started its own music store where it will have a direct relationship with its customers too.
